Introduction

The following text is from Wolfpaw, intoducing the subject matter:

     Changing Times

My name is Sound Of Rain. I have no warrior's name because I was never a warrior. All my life I trod the path of a medicine man, born on the very day the storms, came after the greatest drought my people have known. The rivers ran dry and the water left the lakes, but when my father brought me out to show the tribe his new son, the rains came and washed me clean and watered the land. The spirits had chosen my path.

My children tell me that one hundred and eight summers have passed since that day. Many things have changed since then; I have seen them change. Sit awhile and I will tell you. Quickly now - I feel my ancestors calling.

Look around and what do you see? Forests, lakes, rivers. Wide open meadows. Hills high and low with wide valleys between. Eagles fly, the totem animal of our tribe. Ah, you say, it was always like this. No. Once, yes and now again. But in between....

Men lived in this land, numbered as the grains of sand by the river's edge. They thrived and tamed all things, worshipped metal above nature, enslaved the grasses and the fruit-bearing trees. When every bit of space was taken, they fought a war that lasted as long as my lifetime with men of other lands. At the end, the world was torn into four pieces and the bones of all those men lay across the broken hills and valleys. That is how the spirits of my ancestors tell it at least.

A small number of men survived. Some living in the same way, across the sea. Seeking the same things as those who warred, they rebuild the same way of life and still go to war for the same reasons. Some survived here, though, in this place they call the Old World, where the devastation was most terrible. And these few were people like my father's father, living through the worst years as the ground healed and things began to grow again. Taking succor from spirits, each tribe a different one: Wolf, Bear, Coyote, Bison and yes, Eagle.

When I was born, the forest was small and withered, but the rains came and washed the war away. The trees grow fast now and the plains have tall grasses, as it once was. We have prospered, we who live in the lands near Lake Wolfpaw which is full of water, clear and clean. More than any other native sons, the Wolf tribe holds it sacred, honoring it as we do the prairie.

In my lifetime outsiders came, those from their New World across the sea. They came in search of the ancients' metal, one or two at first, then a handful, and then more. They build towns and use guns to hunt the bison which are huge and angry beasts these days. They look for the great bears, as big as trees, lords of the forest we have respected. They kill them and take their skins. Meanwhile, others cut down the very forest and float the trees down Ushanula to other lands.

I must leave you now. I have done my turn on the back of the great eagle, and must go sit with my ancestors to talk of the old days. If you wish to ask me something, come and seek me out. This too is another thing to change; now it seems that many can enter the spirit world where I was once the only one of my tribe. The land is alive with change and where it will end I cannot say. War perhaps. Such is the way of men. More so for the New Worlders than most, but the Children of the Wolf do not fear them, seeking a great reckoning while the nation of the Eagle seek peace. Mighty warriors or men with the courage to speak soft words - let such heroes decide the future of this land.
